The Esports World Cup 2026 event for chess threw no surprises, as Magnus Carlsen proved his dominance over international chess once again to help it finish as the game's second most popular event this year. The Norwegian player went undefeated throughout the campaign, handing Team Liquid its first win at this year's EWC.

Magnus Carlsen barely broke a sweat as he cruised to yet another impressive title victory. It also ensured he retained a trophy he won during Chess' debut at the EWC last year, and the Norwegian shared his satisfaction with how the tournament unfolded later.

"I was thrilled to go undefeated, and that was part of the strategy as well, not trying to do anything out of the ordinary but trying to play pretty tight chess and taking every chance I could find."

The dominant title defense was made sweeter considering that Carlsen was struggling with physical illness throughout the week. However, the chess legend never appeared to be in genuine trouble, comfortably navigating the Group Stage before recording convincing Playoff wins over Nihal Sarin and Alireza Firouzja to reach the Grand Final without dropping a single game.

The Grand Final was not much different, although Denis Lazavik showed glimpses of why he is so highly rated. The young prodigy tried his best, but in the end, Carlsen was just too strong, absorbing all the Belarusian's aggressive play and eventually turning the game in his favor.
